Kenmore is a dense, compact village on Buffalo's northern edge, laid out on a tight grid of two-story homes and doubles, and it is the oldest of the suburbs we serve: nearly half its housing was built before 1940. It is, electrically, a piece of the city.

Census ACS estimates for 2020-2024 put about 49 percent of Kenmore's roughly 7,200 housing units in buildings completed before 1940, with another 15 percent from the 1940s and 23 percent from the 1950s. Less than 3 percent has been built since 1990. The village was developed as a streetcar suburb off Delaware Avenue, and the houses on its side streets - Colonials, foursquares and the two-family homes common near the Buffalo line - were wired in the knob-and-tube era or just after it.
What that means in a Kenmore attic and basement is the same as in North Buffalo or Parkside: ceramic knobs and tubes, cloth-covered conductors, splices made outside boxes, a fuse panel or a small breaker panel that replaced one, and grounding that consists of a clamp on the water service. Homes have typically had a kitchen circuit or two added in the 1950s or 1970s and little else.
Every project in a pre-war Kenmore home begins with mapping. We identify which knob-and-tube runs are still live, which circuits the newer cable feeds, and what the service can actually carry. From there most owners stage the work: retire the attic knob-and-tube before any insulation project, rewire the kitchen and bathrooms with the dedicated and GFCI-protected circuits the 2023 NEC requires, replace the panel and upgrade the service, and finish with the bedroom and living room circuits.
The lots are narrow and the houses close together, so detached garages at the back are the norm, usually fed by a single old circuit if at all. EV charger installs in Kenmore almost always involve a buried run from the house to the garage with a subpanel or disconnect there, and a load calculation that often points to a 200-amp upgrade first.
Two-family homes are common, particularly toward the Buffalo line, and the work of separating units electrically, adding detector circuits and labeling panels for landlords is a regular part of the job here.
Kenmore's housing also has a high share of finished third-floor attics and enclosed porches added in the 1940s and 1950s, both of which were typically wired by tapping the nearest existing circuit. Those spaces, especially attic bedrooms with window air conditioners in summer and space heaters in winter, are where overloaded circuits show up first, and giving them their own circuits is frequently the first stage of a larger plan.
Kenmore is a village inside the Town of Tonawanda but issues its own building permits through the village building department. Electrical work is inspected by an approved electrical inspection agency under the New York State Uniform Code. Because so much of the village's housing is over eighty years old, inspectors here see a great deal of knob-and-tube work and expect it to be done properly - dead runs disconnected at the panel, not just abandoned live in the walls.
