Cheektowaga is Buffalo's eastern neighbor, home to the airport and to about 41,000 housing units built mostly in the twenty years after World War II. Half of the town's homes went up in the 1950s and 1960s, which makes it one of the most concentrated aluminum-wiring-era towns in the region.

Look at the year-built numbers for Cheektowaga and the story is obvious. Per 2020-2024 Census ACS estimates, about 26 percent of housing units date to the 1950s and another 24 percent to the 1960s. Add the 12 percent from the 1940s and the 14 percent from the 1970s, and roughly three-quarters of the town was built between 1940 and 1979. Only about 11 percent predates 1940, and barely 4 percent has been built since 2000. These are the capes, ranches and split-levels along Union Road, Harlem Road and George Urban Boulevard, and behind the Walden Galleria - solid houses now sixty to seventy years old with their original electrical systems reaching the end of the line.
Two things follow. First, the 1960s slice, nearly a quarter of the town, overlaps the 1965-1973 period when aluminum branch wiring was commonly installed in new construction; the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's data on pre-1972 aluminum-wired homes is the reason we inspect every 1960s Cheektowaga house for it. Second, panels from that era - including Federal Pacific and Zinsco units - were sized for a house with a gas furnace, a fridge and a television, and they are now running central air, a second refrigerator in the garage and a home office.
Aluminum wiring correction is the signature job. In a 1967 ranch that means opening every receptacle, switch and fixture box, checking the terminations, and either pigtailing with COPALUM crimps or AlumiConn connectors or, where the owner is renovating anyway, rewiring the circuit in copper. Warm cover plates, flickering lights and a faint hot-plastic smell at an outlet are the early signs.
Panel replacement is the second. Cheektowaga basements are mostly poured concrete or block and reasonably dry, so the panel itself is usually in fair shape, but the brand, the 100-amp size and the lack of any arc-fault or ground-fault protection are what drive the upgrade. Owners doing a kitchen remodel, adding central air or installing an EV charger typically find they need the service upgraded first.
The third is the small stuff that adds up in a postwar house: the original backstabbed receptacles failing one by one, bathroom circuits with no GFCI, a garage on a single 15-amp circuit that now runs a freezer and a workbench, and exterior outlets that were never weather-rated.
Cheektowaga also has a notable number of homes that were converted to add an in-law apartment in the basement or over the garage, and those conversions frequently ran on extensions of existing circuits rather than new ones. Bringing a second unit up to standard - its own circuits, GFCI and AFCI protection, detector wiring, sometimes a subpanel - is a routine part of the work here, and often the thing that lets an owner rent the space legally.
Permits go through the town's building department, and inspections are performed by an approved electrical inspection agency under the New York State Uniform Code and the 2023 NEC. Depew village straddles the Cheektowaga-Lancaster line and has its own building office; its page is separate. Homes near the Buffalo Niagara International Airport are no different electrically, but service drops there are often shared with older overhead utility plant, and we coordinate closely with National Grid when a service entrance is rebuilt.
